Main Research Interests

The high abundance of marine viruses results in about 10^29 viral infections per day, causing the release of ~108–109 tonnes of carbon per day from the oceanic biological pool. However, the influence of viruses on the biogeochemical cycles is still poorly understood. My doctoral thesis aims at the:

  • Determination of Carbon and Nitrogen assimilation of major algal species during infection using bulk measurements and nanoSIMS.
  • Investigation of algae-bacterial interactions using atomic force microscopy.
  • Deducing identities of bacterial populations benefited by viral mediated algal lysis by CARD-FISH.
  • Quantifying the microbial mediated carbon remineralisation.
  • Single cell assimilation of algae and bacterial communities using nanoSIMS.
