Algae in darkness – Survival strategy unraveled
14.03.2011
The world’s oceans teem with unicellular algae that carry out photosynthesis in the sunlight. It has been known for some time that the particularly abundant diatoms (unicellular algae with a silicate frustule) are also able to survive in the dark bottom of the ocean, where neither photosynthesis nor respiration with oxygen is possible. Scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Bremen have unraveled the mystery of how these microalgae are able to cope with such unfavorable conditions. Their conclusions appear in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences: In darkness, the diatoms breathe with nitrate in place of oxygen. [more]

Advanced colour photography – a new method of spectral analysis gets to the bottom of single cells and biofilms
31.03.2009
Investigations of the inner life of single cells usually require the destruction of these cells in order to extract and quantify their content. Until now this rendered repeated measurements and studies of temporal developments impossible. A recent development at the Max-Planck-Institute for Marine Microbiology has changed that. MOSI, a novel colour photography system, allows for fast and non-destructive imaging of cell pigments at various scales and thereby opens up new possibilities in microbial ecology. [more]
The Marine Nitrogen Cycle - Revisited
02.03.2009
Predicting the ocean’s role for global climate requires a profound understanding of the cycling of matter in the sea.
Regarding nitrogen losses, scientists were apparently off the mark. A novel study reveals the complex interactions in the nitrogen cycle of the Eastern Tropical South Pacific oxgen minimum zone. [more]
