EVA-MARIA ZETSCHE (Free University Brussels, Belgium)
will give a seminar with the title:
"Advanced digital holographic microscopy and 4D imagery for oceanographic applications"
Abstract:
Holography has been around in the marine sciences since the 1960s and has focused on recording organisms, particularly copepods, and particles. Recent advances in digital holography have extended the applications to measuring trajectories and thereby also assessing predator-prey interactions. Digital holography not only allows a much greater depth of focus compared to light microscopy but also provides phase information on the study object. Recently, a digital holographic microscopy (DHM) technique has been developed that improves the image quality by partially coherent illumination (thus reducing the laser speckle noise) and extends the application domain by the addition of fluorescence imaging and/or darkfield illumination. This digital holographic microscope has now been used to investigate natural samples of phyto- and zooplankton. Furthermore, preliminary testing of exopolymeric substances (EPS, TEPs, coral mucus, etc.) will be presented assessing the advantages of using DHM on this translucent material.
