Computing Department Services

Hardware

We try to meet the needs of all co-workers and supply them with an adequate computer. Should this is not possible there are computers available in the library equipped with standard software installations. The Computing Department has also the possibility to equip private computers with installations of the MPI network (only WLAN).

Software

If possible the last version of Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, Thunderbird, Endnote, Sigmaplot, Virusscan, Acrobat, etc. will be the standard installation for PCs. Many software packages are available in the form of Research & Education contracts or Campus licenses that can be supplied by the Computer Department. Therefore, please contact us should you need additional software during your stay at the MPI.

Input and output appliances

To save and present your scientific results various modern Input and Output appliances are available. Laser printer (black/white, coloured; DIN A4 and DIN A3), Colour ink printer (DIN A4 and DIN A3), Scanner for DIN A4 as well as scanner for slides, beamer, slide projectors, ZIP drives, CD burner, etc .

Dial service

The institute offers its co-workers a quick dial-up connection from at home or during an expedition to the institute´s services like download of e-mails, literature via OVID and to use all UNIX computers (and comparable). This service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Electronic mail

E-mail is available for all MPI co-workers. Your e-mail address will be in the form of username with @mpi-bremen.de.

Fileserver

The Computing Department offers the huge storage capacity of our fileservers for personal accounts as well as for group or project accounts. Ajoint data usage is possible and saving personal data in accordance with the data protection act.

Data backup

Data on the fileserver is backed-up daily: Monday to Sunday. All user files on our fileservers and communication servers will be saved by frequent back up procedures during the night.

Network

The institute´s Linux based network is primarily installed with Windows NT and Windows 2000 work stations. All PCs, servers and printers in the institute are connected with each other by 10/100 Mbps or 1 Gbps data lines.

World-Wide-Web

The Computer Department is the administrator of a web server for publishing the institute´s research programs, events, publications, etc. via internet.
