Ph.D. position: Analysis and Interpretation of next-generation sequencing data from marine habitats
Location: Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology, Bremen, Germany
Deadline: August 31th, 2010
A Ph.D. fellowship is available in the Microbial Genomics and Bioinformatics group of Prof. Glöckner at the MPI-Bremen. The group is focused on the bioinformatics of modern microbial genomics, phylogeny and data integration (
www.microbial-genomics.de).
The Ph.D. fellowship is part of the multi-national research project MAMBA (Marine Metagenomics for new Biotechnological Applications) as well as the German research project MIMAS (Microbial Interactions in MArine Systems), funded by the European Union (
http://mamba.bangor.ac.uk/) and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (
www.mimas-projekt.de), respectively. The task will be to participate in mining large amounts of next-generation sequencing data from marine habitats, with a focus on ecological functioning as well as enzyme candidates with potential biotechnological applicability.
In-house bioinformatics and a modern compute cluster will support the work. Hence, preparatory training in bioinformatics is a plus. Also a plus but not a requirement is experience with metagenome or next-generation sequencing data.
Applicants should have proficiencies or strong interests at least one of the following fields:
-genomics / metagenomics / expression studies
-next-generation sequencing data
-bioinformatics / databases / statistics
If you have some of the above mentioned skills or want to develop into this area, and are interested in working on metagenome datasets from interesting environments in order to solve meaningful biological questions with applied bioinformatics, then we would like to hear from you.
This position requires a Master’s or equivalent in biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, computational biology or a related field. Salary will be the regular amount for Ph.D. students in Germany (TVÖD 13/2).
The Max Plank Institute for Marine Microbiology is a well-reputed and well-connected public research institution, located near the campus of the University Bremen. It offers a good environment for career development and social activities. Bremen is a major city in the northwest of Germany, featuring a vivid social and cultural life.
