Selected Projects

GEO BON Omic Biodiversity Observation Network (Omic BON) | Co-founder and Coordinator
APRIL 2022 (JULY 2020) - PRESENT | https://tinyurl.com/3hpz4jmz

Omic BON will build a globally integrated, omic meta-observatory that monitors biodiversity at the molecular level. It will bring together observations from terrestrial, aquatic (marine and freshwater), and space ecosystems with the aim to transition the fragmented observation of biomolecular biodiversity into coordinated contributions to a meta-observatory for collective insight and action.

UN Ocean Decade Programme Ocean Biomolecular Observing Network (OBON) | interim Scientific Advisory Committee (iSAC) member, Data co-lead, Early Career Ocean Professional (ECOP) representative
JUNE 2021 - PRESENT | https://tinyurl.com/bddfaw72 & https://tinyurl.com/4eredbtc

OBON will develop a global system that will allow science and society to understand ocean life like never before. The programme will transform how we sense, harvest, protect, and manage ocean life, which faces multiple stresses including pollution, habitat loss, and climate change. It will also help communities detect biological hazards like harmful algal blooms and pathogens and be a key component of next-generation ocean observing systems.

UN Ocean Decade Project Better Biomolecular Ocean Practices (BeBOP) under the Ocean Biomolecular Observing Network (OBON) | Co-founder & Member
JULY 2022 - PRESENT | https://tinyurl.com/yw9jv3eh

Under OBON, BeBOP aims to empower and digitise omics protocols from long-term observatories around the world using machine-readable templates and metadata. BeBOP is building upon and expanding efforts started under the OBPS TT 21-03. It will leverage and advance activities to develop protocol templates and metadata specifications, while working with strategic OBON partners in ocean observing and contributing to OBON’s aims for capacity sharing and interprogramme coordination (OBON – OceanPractices).

IOC-UNESCO Ocean Best Practices System (OBPS) Task Team 21-03: Omics/eDNA Protocol Management | Co-chair
SEPTEMBER 2021 - JULY 2022 | https://tinyurl.com/4xfj99rp

The IOC-UNESCO OBPS TT aims to improve the user-driven discovery of omics/eDNA protocols by developing omics protocol templates and developing omics specific protocol metadata with the Minimum Information for an Omic Protocol (MIOP). This is a continuation and maturation of the OBPS Omics follow-up working group, which now officially sits under the OBPS. It further matured into the BeBOP project under the UN Ocean Decade.

TDWG GBWG Task Group for Sustainable DarwinCore MIxS Interoperability | Co-convenor
DECEMBER 2020 - AUGUST 2021 | https://tinyurl.com/2vys2u9w

Co-convenor of a Task Group under TDWG and GSC to develop a sustainably interoperable MIxS-driven extension of DwC to ensure that data produced in either MIxS- or DwC-compliant form can be automatically brokered between user communities, bringing the communities closer together.
