I am a guest scientist from Italy, where I graduated in Environmental Biology from the University of Trieste. I am investigating the phylogeny of sulfur-oxidizing SUP05 (Gammaproteobacteria) through in silico analyses and molecular techniques, such as CARD-FISH. This bacterial group does not have any cultured representatives, although it has been found in different environments such as hydrothermal plumes, oxygen minimum zones, and as symbionts of several marine invertebrate, e.g., deep-sea vent clams and mussels. My goal is to elucidate the role of this clade in hydrothermal vents and plumes systems, focusing on its sulfur-oxidation pathways, and biogeography.
