Research interests

I’m a geologist interested in the interactions between biosphere and geosphere. I investigate questions how biologic networks influence their biochemical environment and how external forcing (e.g. ecologic perturbations) affects biologic communities in their mode of function and biologic composition. I consider my particular strength in this research field to be able to combine light stable isotope techniques with modeling.

My research addresses the evolution of sulfur cycling, biochemical isotope fractionation processes, microbe-mineral interactions, environmental problems, global environmental change, and extends to Mars’ exploration.

  • Impact of biogeochemical sulfur cycling on the oxygen isotope composition of sulfate
  • Role of elemental sulfur and sulfite in biochemical sulfur cycling
  • Connection between sulfur cycle and other geochemical cycles, i.e. metals
  • Sulfur cycling in extreme environments and their link to Mars
