Antje Boetius elected as new member of Pour le Mérite
The association of artists and scholars was founded in 1842 by Friedrich Wilhelm IV and revived in 1952 by Federal President Theodor Heuss. It is under the patronage of the President of Germany. The first chancellor of the order was the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt.
“Pour le Mérite” brings together outstanding personalities from science and culture. Today, it has 36 national and 37 international members, including 17 Nobel Prize winners. The new members, alongside Antje Boetius the lyricist Wolf Biermann and the theologian Christoph Markschies, will be formally inducted into the order at the upcoming ceremony on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at the Konzerthaus Berlin.
With this induction, the order honors Antje Boetius' outstanding contributions to marine research and her commitment to protecting the oceans.
From 2017 to 2025, she headed the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven before taking over as president of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI).
We congratulate her on this achievement!
