Main Research Interests

In the water column and in the bed of lakes and oceans diverse physical, chemical and biological processes take place: Settling of particles and marine snow in the water column, photosynthesis, diffusion, chemical reactions, bio-irrigation, waves and currents as well as advective flows of water and gas through permeable seebeds. Here we combine mathematical modeling of these processes and their experimental validation by non-invasive, laser-based visualization and measurement techniques to improve our understanding of marine systems. With the mathematical models we quantify the exchange of oxygen and other nutrients between the water layer and porous bodies such as marine aggregates, bio-films, microbial mats and permeable rippled seabeds.
