ODP Leg 201

ODP Leg 201

In 2002, we participated in the first ODP Leg dedicated to exploring the Deep Biosphere – ODP Leg 201 Peru Biosphere. On ODP Leg 201, in addition to daily sampling activities as one of the shipboard microbiologists, I was responsible or involved in determination of sulfate reduction rate activities (Parkes et al., 2005), sulfur chemistry (D’Hondt et al., 2004), and quantification of prokaryotic biomass and its relationship to activity (Schippers et al., 2005).

Details regarding Leg 201 can be found on the ODP 201 website.

Continued research on ODP 201 Sites and samples include examining the paleo-oceanographic imprint on the deep biosphere and deconvoluting past deep biosphere dynamics in collaboration with Patrick Meister and Sergio Contreras.
To detect microbial activity sub-samples of deep sediment obtained on the drill-ship are injected with radio-labeled substrates.
