Born to be wild: Resolving uncultivated microbe-to-microbe interactions

Marine microbial communities of bacteria, archaea, eukaryotes, and viruses “turn over” on the scale of days to weeks due, to large extent, microbe-to-microbe interactions such as predation and viral infection. In my seminar, I will discuss what daily-resolved time-series of the full microbial community in the surface, subtropical Pacific Ocean have revealed about bloom dynamics and interactions. I will also describe how I have used ‘single-cell’ genomics to uncover novel associations within these communities, including ‘tiny’ bacteria and ‘giant’ viruses associated with choanoflagellates, the bacterivorous protist lineage that is the closest living unicellular relative of animals. Finally, I will discuss my vision and plans to contribute to an understanding of the interconnectedness and biology of marine microbe-to-microbe interactions, leading to more predictive and mechanistic power of marine microbial dynamics.
