The new frontier of anoxia

New technologies are pushing the detection limit for O2 ever lower revealing that less and less of Earth’s surface environments are truly anoxic. At the same time we are discovering that many microorganisms can thrive at these ultra-low O2 concentrations, including some formerly considered strict anaerobes. What does this mean for the expanding hypoxic waters of our lakes and oceans? What are the implications for life on early Earth, and even on other planets?
