Hydrothermal sediments
I am studying the influence of hydrothermal vents on the surrounding sediments in terms of the microbiological community.
Hydrothermal vents are all around in the ocean, especially at plate tectonic boundaries or where volcanism emerges. Microbes that can make a living from the chemicals emitted by the vents. these environments are extreme in different terms, like temperature, pH and toxic concentration levels of metals. The research sites I am studying spanning between the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and almost 4000 meters below there surface to a water depth 20 meters in the Mediterranean Sea.
Samples are mainly taken during research cruises and with a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) that dives down to the hydrothermal vents and samples sediments around it. My job starts afterwards, after we take it back, doing the laboratory work and the bioinformatics analyses. Using bioinformatic tools, I am piecing together the stories of how these microbes are living in these extreme environments, which are so different from what we are used to.
