Hydrothermal sediments

I am stu­dy­ing the in­flu­ence of hydro­ther­mal vents on the sur­roun­ding se­di­ments in terms of the micro­bio­lo­gi­cal com­mu­ni­ty.
Hydro­ther­mal vents are all around in the oce­an, es­pe­cial­ly at pla­te tec­to­nic boun­da­ries or whe­re vol­ca­nism emer­ges. Mi­cro­bes that can make a li­ving from the che­mi­cals emit­ted by the vents. the­se en­vi­ron­ments are ex­tre­me in dif­fe­rent terms, like tem­pe­ra­tu­re, pH and to­xic con­cen­tra­ti­on le­vels of me­tals. The re­se­arch sites I am stu­dy­ing span­ning bet­ween the Mid-At­lan­tic Ridge and al­most 4000 me­ters be­low the­re sur­face to a wa­ter depth 20 me­ters in the Me­di­ter­ra­ne­an Sea. 
Sam­ples are main­ly ta­ken du­ring re­se­arch crui­ses and with a re­mo­te­ly ope­ra­ted ve­hi­cle (ROV) that di­ves down to the hy­dro­ther­mal vents and sam­ples se­di­ments around it. My job starts af­ter­wards, af­ter we take it back, do­ing the la­bo­ra­to­ry work and the bioinformatics analyses. Using bioinforma­tic tools, I am piecing together the stories of how the­se mi­cro­bes are li­ving in the­se ex­tre­me en­vi­ron­ments, which are so different from what we are used to.
