Dr. Greta Reintjes

I am a marine biologist and microbial ecologist investigating microbiomes, the community of microorganisms colonizing a particular ecosystem, and the role they play in the local and global biogeochemical cycling of carbon.

I study the microorganisms from two environments – the world oceans and animal digestive systems – and although these habitats might seem quite distinct from each other, the microorganisms in both systems use the same pathways to process complex sugars.

I have just finished a two-year outgoing phase of a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in the Abbott Group at the Lethbridge Research and Development Center of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. I am now finalising my research in the return phase at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in the Department of Molecular Ecology.
