The institute actively cooperates with many different researchers from Germany and all over the world. This is, amongst others, reflected in many joint scientific publications. Morever, the fact that there are more than 30 different nationalities at the MPIMM demonstrates that the institute is attractive for many scientists.
The northwestern region of Germany is internationally recognized for its excellence in marine, polar and climate research. Together, universities and research institutions build a strong training network for early career scientists. Within the Northwest German Marine Research Association (Nordwestverbund Meeresforschung) Structured M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs guarantee marine education and supervision on its highest level.

The language of education in all graduate courses is English. In most programs, international students make up half of the student body. Close cooperation between the research institutions ensures that early career scientists are welcome to participate in trainings offered by programs other than their own. An overview over study and training opportunities for Master and Ph.D. students in marine science are shown on the common website of the programmes at the Northwest Germany Marine Research Association (Nordwestverbund Meeresforschung).
